Yankees reclaim lead on homer and hold off Cardinals, 9-8

The Edgewood Veterinary Clinic Yankees needed Mike Kuchenthal’s two-run homer in the fourth inning to go ahead 9-8 as they beat the Union Bank Cardinals by that score Saturday night in the final regular-season baseball game of Auburn Little League’s Major Division for ages 10-12 at Beggs Field.
Ryan Miller and Jeff Mason were each 2-for-3 for the Yankees, with Miller stroking a double, while Adam Stiles was 2-for-4. Jordan Arndt added a double and two RBIs and Wade Andrews, Derek Bivins and Mark Miracle each contributed a single.
For the Cardinals, who came back from a 7-3 first-inning deficit to lead 8-7 after three innings, Keith Cully was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, and Jared Glenn and Bobby Henning were each 2-for-3 with a double. Scott Ball added a single.
In other Major Division games last week:
Placer Sierra Bank Angels 3, Auburn Journal Indians 0 — The Angels scored three runs in the first inning on hits by Henry Godsey, Luke Danielewicz, Max Harris. In the fifth inning, relief pitcher Jesse Danielewicz came in and got the Angels out of a bases-loaded jam by inducing a double play. He also pitched the sixth for the save, and helped his cause with a single. Teammate Matt Ross also singled.
Matt Rice and Jake Elia each singled for the Indians’ two hits.
Elks Lodge No. 1691 Pirates 8, Nation’s Rent Athletics 7 — Jeff Villanueva’s two-run single tied the game 7-7 in the bottom of the fifth then came around to score the winning run, and the Pirates held the A’s scoreless in the top of the sixth to seal the victory.
Chad Redfearn, Austin Maynard and Cameron Price each had two hits to lead the Pirates, with Redfearn scoring twice and Maynard doubling and scoring. Chris Cox doubled, walked three times and scored, Josh Borg and Carl Lipsmeyer each had a hit and scored a run, and Andrew Tuller was 1-for-2.
For the A’s, Mike Cody was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, Joe Jacinto and Jordan Newman were each 2-for-3, Ben Elkin, Max Stapenhorst, Justin Schuster and Jacinto doubled, and Chris Bendana singled.
Auburn 20/30 Club Cubs 10, Kiwanis Club Braves 9 — In a wild one that saw six lead changes, the Cubs answered last with a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth and final inning to prevail. They out-hit the Braves 13-10.
Adam Fry had three singles to lead the Cubs, while Steven French belted a double and a single, and Evan Kotey, Jake Carlisle and Dustin Burnes each singled once.
For the Braves, Cameron Gibson tripled, doubled and singled, Clifton Meyers singled twice, and Adam Reed doubled and singled, and Brandon Coakley singled.
Braves 3, A’s 0 — The winners needed only four hits, including singles by Cameron Gibson, Clifton Meyers and Brandon Coakley, as their pitching held the A’s to a single by Max Stapenhorst and another by Justin Schuster.
Cubs 13, Yankees 3 — The Cubs outscored their foes 4-1 in both the second and third innings to pull away. Aaron Heffernan went 2-for-3, Steven French tripled, Chris Bednorski doubled, and Donald “Skippy” Rey, Nathan Van Riper and Adam Fry each came up with one base hit.
For the Yankees, Ryan Miller and Wade Andrews were each 2-for-3, with Miller smacking a solo home run. Derek Bivins and Jeff Mason each had one hit, with Bivins scoring three times.
Indians 5, Cardinals 0 — Kevin Healy went 2-for-3 with a homer and triple to lead the Tribe, which scored three in the first inning and cruised. Evan Bradley was 2-for-3 and Harrison Penrose 1-for-3 with a double.
For the Cards, Dillon Powers went 2-for-3 and Brandon Roskelley, Jared Glenn, Scott Ball and Bobby Henning each had one hit.
Cubs 7, Yankees 2 — Jessica Lockhart went 2-for-3 to lead the Cubs to the victory. Adam Fry singled and scored three times, Chris Bednorski singled and scored twice, and Dustin Burnes singled.
For the Yankees, Jeremy Turney, Mark Miracle, Ryan Miller and Travis Wright each singled once. Mike Kuchenthal went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI, and Jeff Mason drove in a run and scored one.
A’s 8, Braves 6 — The A’s out-hit the Braves 11-3 but had to rally back from a 6-5 deficit with a three-run burst in the bottom of the fifth to get the win.
Wes Kyle had a double and three RBIs and Jordan Newman two hits and three RBIs to lead the way. Justni Schuster went 2-for-3 with a double, Spencer Zaputil doubled, and Max Stapenhorst, Ben Elkin and Chris Bendana singled once apiece.
The Braves got a double and two RBIs from Cameron Gibson, an RBI each from Buck Brogdon and Adam Reed, and single hits from Clifton Meyers and Scott Svilich.
Angels 8, Pirates 3 — The Angels systematically downed the Pirates, scoring twice in each of the first four innings. Jake Lopez and Luke Danielewicz each homered and singled once, and Michael Booker and Matt Ross each ripped a double. Henry Godsey added two doubles and Matt Ragusano two base hits.
For the Pirates, who pulled within 4-3 in the top of the third, Chad Redfearn had a big day with two doubles and a single. Cameron Price doubled and singled, and Jeff Villanueva and Austin Maynard each singled once.
